Kms
India, Ground Water serves as the primary 0 12.5 25 50 75 100
source of irrigation for approximately 60%
of the country's net irrigated area, as
reported by the Central Ground Water
Board. However, the excessive exploitation
of Ground Water resources for irrigation
has resulted in a decline in Ground Water
levels across various regions in the country,
particularly in states like Punjab,

Haryana, and Rajasthan. Consequently,
this depletion of Ground Water reserves
was led to water scarcity situations and Table 68. District-wise Ground

poses a significant challenge. Figure 87 Water Utilization (1000 m )
depicts the Ground Water utilization for Coverage under Irrigation Sector
irrigation in Haryana, categorized into
four classes, as outlined in Table 67. Among
the districts, Karnal, Fatehabad, and Sirsa
exhibit the highest levels of Ground Water
utilization for irrigation, as indicated in
Table 68. Conversely, Charkhi Dadri,
Faridabad, Gurugram, Jhajjar, Mewat,
Panchkula, and Rohtak demonstrate lower
levels of Ground Water utilization for
irrigation, falling below 300,000,000 cubic
meters per year.To address these concerns
and promote sustainable Ground Water
usage for irrigation, the Government of
Haryana has implemented several
measures aimed at protecting and
conserving Ground Water resources for
future generations. Initiatives such as the
construction of check dams, rainwater
harvesting structures, and recharge pits
have been undertaken to enhance Ground
Water recharge. Additionally, farmers are
encouraged to adopt water-saving
techniques like drip irrigation and
sprinkler irrigation. The "Mera Paani, Meri
Viraasat" campaign also plays a crucial role
in promoting efficient water utilization in
agriculture.
