aryana is a highly agriculturally developed state in India, known for its major
Kharif crops such as Paddy, Cotton, Bajra, and Sugarcane. Additionally, the
Hregion cultivates several minor crops depending on the availability of S
resources. Jowar, Maize, Groundnut, Pulses, Vegetables, and Fodders are important Scale
crops grown in the area. Figure 68 illustrates the pattern of these other crops in Kms
Haryana, showcasing the crop diversity within the region. Graph 39 reveals that the 0 12.5 25 50 75 100
southern districts of Haryana exhibit a greater variety of crops compared to the
northern districts. Sirsa, Mahendragarh, and Mewat districts stand out with a high
coverage of other crops, thanks to their diverse topography, water resources, soil
quality, and rainfall distribution.
However, certain challenges exist in different parts of Haryana. In the southern
districts, such as Gurugram, Faridabad, and Mewat, there is a severe depletion of
Ground Water due to excessive extraction for industrial and urban purposes. As a
result of the uncontrolled usage of borewells, Ground Water levels are dropping,
which has an effect on agriculture and forces farmers to concentrate on more hardy
crops. Waterlogging is a common problem in Rohtak, Jind, and Bhiwani in central
Haryana. These areas also experience water quality problems, including high salinity
levels and other contaminants. To address these challenges, the government should
consider implementing measures like promoting micro-irrigation techniques,
encouraging rainwater harvesting, and constructing check dams. Comprehensive
and sustainable solutions are necessary to ensure the long-term availability of water
resources in these regions.
